Stagnant air, often caused by an anticyclone, temperature inversion, or low wind speeds, can result in high concentrations of pollutants and hazy conditions.

On days when the AQI is predicted to be elevated due to fine particle pollution, agencies or public health organizations might take certain measures, such as:

• Advising sensitive groups, like the elderly, children, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular problems, to avoid outdoor exertion.
• Declaring an "action day" to encourage voluntary measures for reducing air emissions, such as using public transportation.
• Recommend the use of masks to prevent fine particles from entering the lungs.

• Red: AQI 151 - 200 - Unhealthy. Everyone may begin to experience health effects, and members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.
• Purple: AQI 201 - 300 - Very Unhealthy. Health warnings of emergency conditions. The entire population is more likely to be affected.
• Brown: AQI 300+ - Hazardous. Health alert: everyone may experience more serious health effects.
